Happy Birthday, Artemis!

Rising Stars

Mockingbirdflyaway

Alvin Mockingbirdflyaway, nominated both last year and this year for her WIP novel Cause and Effect, has avoided falling into many of the traps of those who pair Artemis with an original character. Her fic is excellently plotted and refreshingly uncliched - her heroine is both likeable and interesting, and Artemis's reactions to her are wholly in character. (It's great; you should read it.)

What’s your best fic (in your opinion)?
In terms of writing style and readability, Cause and Effect is my best overall, because it's my most recent. I really feel I nailed Artemis' character and how he would react to someone like Andrea.

What’s your favorite fic (someone else’s)?
Anna Grayson and the Order of Merlin, by DaveO. It's in the Harry Potter section, but it's one of the best and longest fics on the site. The story behind it amazing too, because it was co written by a father and daughter while the daughter, Katie, was in hospital.
Though you probably want to know what my favourite AF fic is, don't you? I'd have to say AgiVega's "The Aztec Incident".

Is there a WIP (work in progress) fic you’d like to recommend?
Wolf's Silhouette, "Wintergreen" had me laughing the whole way through.

Who is your favorite fanfic author?
 Nokomiss

What Pairings do you ship?
Artemis/OC and I tend to enjoy Artemis/Holly stories on occasion.

What’s your favorite genre to read and/or write?
Action/adventure, it seems. I like character-centric stories though.

How did you find Artemis Fowl?
I saw an ad for it in the Scholastics catalogue and really liked the sound of it, so I bought it from a bookfair. It's been heaven ever since.

How did you get started writing fanfiction?
In the summer before grade 9, I stumbled across fanfiction.net on bored.com and after reading a few  stories, I realized that I could do that too!

Are you involved in any other parts of the fandom, like fansites or forums?
I've written stuff for HP, Star Trek and Inuyasha.  I also post regularly on Artemis Fowl confidential, and I'm also a member of Inheritance forums, though I don't think the trilogy is very good. I also belong to several writing groups.

Do you have any plans for future fics?
Immediate plans for my AF fics are, at the moment: Get my hands on The Lost Colony. Since I live in Canada, this is rather difficult, because it's not supposed to be released for another three weeks here. I plan to finish Cause and Effect, and it'll be novel length, and full of angsty and adventurous goodness.

After that, I have an idea for another fic, but I won't spoil it here, because it'll probably take me a year or two to finish Cause and Effect.

What’s one area of your writing which you want to improve on?
Discipline! I need to learn how to sit down and just write a thousand or so words per day. Since I want to a be a bona-fide author, this would be a valuable skill!

What else do you do with your days when not fandoming?
My main interest is my WIP novel, Saving Nicholas. It's sort of the reason why my fanfics are being updated rather slowly. After Saving Nicholas, my interests include music (I play the alto sax), drawing, reading, hanging out with friends, languages (I have about six years of French and three of Mandarin Chinese under my belt, plus some Japanese and Russian), and last but not least, stalking hot boys. Well... not stalking them. Admiring them. From a carefully researched distance.

In 50 words or less, say something to the rest of the fandom!
The Artemis Fowl fans are probably among the quirkiest that I've ever met. There's more of a sense of community among them and everybody has at least heard of everyone else, unlike with HP and some of the other fandoms, because they're soooo much bigger.
