Happy Birthday, Artemis!

Forgotten Fics

Blue Yeti Here is a showcase of ‘forgotten fics’: brilliant stories, long lost in the quagmire of ff.net. Many of them were written years ago, but as their authors have moved on, so have their fans. It was time the newest Fowlers got to enjoy them.

Kleptomaniac, by Jude

There are some secrets that should remain secrets. Some secrets that have power. And some...
Jude’s work is stunning; it always is. Hovering between anguishing and bloody brilliant this fic is well worth reading. In a setting that utilises words and concepts from Irish myth, Jude has created a race of kleptomaniac, beautiful fey (or Aes Sidhe). By extending ideas of the Ritual, and the myths of the Tuatha de Danann, Jude followed some of Colfer’s notions to a logical conclusion. With terrifying, black-winged mobs, this was the first fic which could have been classified as ‘apocalyptic’.

As the Moon Falls Into the Sea, by Li Kayun

A few days after the kidnapping incident, Artemis Fowl still has a few words left to say to Captain Short.
This fic deserves a mention purely for its status as the oldest AF fic remaining on ff.net. However, it also deserves mention for being an intriguing and beautiful description of Artemis just after the first book. The first manifestation of morals, the healing of Angeline, is neatly thought about and tied up in this delicate fic. Written before TAI, As the Moon Falls Into the Sea tried to give us an understanding of what both Artemis and Holly would be like after the first book, and it definitely achieved its goals.

A Twist of Fate, by Stardust Firebolt

What if Holly's father had never died? As a sinister plan unfolds, Holly finds herself tangled in a web of lies and betrayal. Then when she finally thinks she's made the right choice, she finds herself back to square one.
Of all forgotten fics, that this one is forgotten tugs at my heart strings. This action/adventure novel is fandom history. A Twist of Fate was the fic of 2002/2003; it was The Aztec Incident, and Stardust Firebolt was AgiVega. As the first Holly/Artemis novel, and the first fic to ever propose Holly/Trouble was a good idea, A Twist of Fate should be read by anyone who loves those ships (or just loves a good adventure). Even though you’ve never heard of it this story is a wonderful ride, with action propelling romance, and romance propelling action, and some amazing twists along the way. The ending will make your heart stop.

New Moon, by Ivycreeper

Cute little fairies with gossamer wings and cherubic little faces were a Victorian construct. From whence were they formed? Read on and discover their 'dark side'.
New Moon is a truly impressive story. Using an encyclopaedia-like knowledge of Irish myths, history and locations Ivycreeper created a story with so many layers I’ve been peeling them away for years. The enticing plot is driven by an ‘evil’ Holly-turned-rogue, who is possessed by ancient, Dark fey (and by chapter five you will be biting your lip, hoping, hoping, hoping that the bad feelings in your guts are wrong). With a cast of well developed secondary characters, like Vinyaya, Argon and Cumulus, alongside masterly one-chapter OCs, there is no way to fault this story. Except that it ends two or three chapters from conclusion. Despite that it is still my all-time favourite AF fic.

Artemis Fowl and the Hostage Situations, by Lessa and Ryn

Artemis and the Butlers have been mindwiped. As Artemis is dealing with odd memories and confusing situations, he receives a strange package in the mail, apparently sent to him...from him. Inside is a single document. A Booke. And the circle begins again...
Not exactly forgotten, but at least outdated, Hostage Situations is one of Lessa and Ryn’s best. The sisters (who write under Lessa3 on ff.net) have produced some definite WOW! ideas, like the Orion Winning, What Have We Done?, but no one can go past an exciting action/adventure like this one. With an engaging, human OC with layered personality and motives, and what I think is one of the most imaginative fairy villains I’ve come across, Hostage Situations is a definite gem. Of course, it ignores TOD, but for months after TOD came out I confused myself by thinking that Hostage Situations was the real 4th book, and TOD was just a dream.

Philophobia, by Skye Firebane / Corpus Delicti

Love is one thing. Lust is another. And they were never in love.
Have I said brilliant already? This is brilliant. As a character study of Briar Cudgeon it is such a complex piece that I am truly amazed that Skye fit so much development, backstory, resentment and confusion into one thousand words. Not only did she fix Opal/Briar into my mind, but she created a Briar who had been nice and pleasant before spiralling into emotionally crippled corruption. But he was still the same fairy all along.
