Issue #4
Love cracking codes? Frustrated by the simplicity of the code at the bottom of the books? Looking for a challenge? Then Crack the Eternity Code is for you!
Last month's code was slightly more difficult. Decoding the Gnommish reveals that the Centaurean is written backwards - that is, left-to-right and bottom-to-top. The Centaurean says that the Eternian has been rotated a half turn. Because of the way Eternian is set up, it would have been difficult to notice that it was upside-down.
The decoded phrase reads:
The boy is a bag of nerves.
Unfortunately, due to technical difficulties, we do not have a list of people who have successfully cracked the code. If you cracked the code, congratulations! And sorry for the inconvenience.
The difficulty level for this issue's code has also taken a leap. Like last issues, there are three "sections," each one coded with a different language.
The last section, the one coded in Eternian, is the actual code that must be broken. Neither the Gnommish nor the Centaurean have to be broken, but cracking it will provide a hint for the Eternian.
There is, however, a catch. The Centaurean is also encrypted, but should be easier to crack than the Eternian. Decoding the Gnommish will provide a clue for the Centaurean.
Fortunately, the Gnommish is not encrypted in any additional way.
As with last time, you will need: a pencil, a piece of paper, and some patience. A set of language charts (Gnommish, Centaurean, and the unnamed "Eternian" code) is recommended. The language charts provided here are courtesy of Matt from the and Kitty Rainbow from . A little knowledge in classical ciphers is also recommended, but not required. If you don't know anything about ciphers, do not despair! There are plenty of pages and encyclopedias on the Internet that will help, but I recommend the one from .
If you have cracked the code, send your solution to the editor. Answers will be published in the next month's issue, along with the names of the successful codebreakers.
Thanks to Dim Aldebaran for "proofreading" the code!
