FAQs
What are the Orion Awards?
They are awards recognising the best in Artemis Fowl fanfiction. Anyone
can nominate fanfics for a variety of categories. Judges in that category
will narrow down the nominations to form a shortlist. Then the Judges
will decide which fic in each category is the best and determine it as
the winner. Winning or being shortlisted for an Orion Award is a great
achievement and is a reflection of the author's noteworthy writing
talent.
Is the Awards site suitable for children to explore?
It is, if you pay attention to the warnings. Warnings will be posted at
the beginning of each fic and beside the summary, and the warnings for
R or NC-17 fics, will be clear so you can go back. We caution children
against reading fanfics with R and NC-17 ratings, especially without
parental permission. Please keep in mind that the Orion Awards staff
is not responsible for the content of "outside" links.
What if I don't want my fic nominated for the Orions?
Click here and leave your pen name, email
addresses, and information about which fics are requested to be withdrawn.
Who are you, and why are you organising the Orion Awards?
We are members of the Artemis Fowl fandom (many of us originated from
Criminality) who would like to recognize the best in AF fanfiction to set
higher quality standards for this fandom's fanfiction and to spur writers
on to new heights.
How can I help with the Orion Awards?
All you have to do, is find your favourite fics and nominate them for
an Award and vote in the People’s Choice Awards. You can also join our forums
and talk about fanfiction, Artemis Fowl, and anything at all with us! This
is the easiest way to help out, and it’s a lot of fun, too.
You can also help us by spreading the word. Tell your friends and fellow fans
about the Orion Awards. And if you have any comments or advice for us, we’d
love to hear them.
If you want to join the Staff you can volunteer to help out with the
Awards judging, which is always an honour and a great experience. You can
also contribute to The Observatory, assist with organising the Awards, or
help out with advertising.
How do I get more information?
You can keep browsing the site for more information, or you can visit the
forums. If you still wish for more information, you may contact a staff
member through e-mail or the forum's PM system.
What does "Orion" mean?
In Greek mythology there exist many interpretations of the hunter Orion's
story. In one version, Orion and the goddess Artemis were engaged.
Tragically, Apollo, Artemis's twin, tricked Artemis into killing Orion.
Another popular story dictates that Orion angered Artemis and in revenge
Artemis sent Scorpio, a scorpion, after him. In both tales, Scorpio,
Orion, and his dog, Sirius (who becomes the Dog Star), were sent into the
skies by the gods as constellations. Orion is a hunter among the stars
who, with his bow and arrow, roams the night sky for eternity,
perpetually chased by Scorpio behind him. His name signifies the relation
of the Orion Awards to Artemis (as in "Artemis Fowl") and the recognition
it gives the winners as great stars in fanfiction.
What is The Observatory?
The Observatory is a zine dedicated to giving fans of both
Artemis Fowl and fanfiction news, editorials, interviews, competitions,
and more. It's intended to complement the Orion Awards' goal of
showcasing quality writing by helping provide people with the means
to improve their writing.
Can I help out with The Observatory?
Certainly! You can join us on the forums here.
We're always looking for feedback, so don't hesitate! If you want to
get more involved, you can send your article to orionobservatory@gmail.com.
